Bon Secours Center offers the perfect sanctuary for a week where you and your art making are the only priorities. Comfortable, quiet, and set on gorgeous grounds, Bon Secours has been our workshop home since 2007!

In this interactive 4-day online class, Skip Lawrence draws on 60plus years of art experience and wisdom to teach you how to think like an artist! 

It is your ideas and feelings, how YOU perceive the world that makes your point of view personal and valuable. He guides you how to bring that originality to YOUR ART.

You can work in any medium or style. All experience levels are welcome. This is not a "paint along" workshop. A willingness to try new things and step out of your comfort zone is your best "supplies."

Workshop runs on Zoom, from noon to 4pm, EST, each day.
On day 1, you’ll explore what you love in subject, materials, size, and approach. You can create a painting each day, or work on one painting over the 4-day workshop. On day 2, you’ll explore mark-making that expresses who you are in color, line, value, etc. On day 3, find  your style: realism, abstraction, or non-objective. On days 2 and 4, there will be a group critique, sharing your ideas and discoveries, and on day 4, there will be a self-evaluation and final day of sharing. It is always inspiring to see the variety of  styles and expressions that show up in a group !

This 4-day class begins on Tuesday and runs through Friday. 

Cheap Joe’s will host this live, online workshop through Zoom, and the sessions will be recorded. 

Participating, enrolled students will receive private, unlimited, lifetime access to the videos on our YouTube channel.

Skip's Not-So-Basic-Basics is great for students who have never studied with Skip or would love a refresher in Skip's unique approach to design.

The Not-So-Basic-Basics takes the familiar rules of design and goes beyond. 

It is the design language that Skip uses to achieve consistent, personal paintings. Hide bound traditions of design can restrict artistic freedom, but these principles actually help you find the design vocabulary that will liberate your own artistic voice and vision. When you know what and why you chose certain design elements, you can decide what serves you or not.

 Online course 5 lessons designed to uncover everyone's unique painting style. The class requires no airports, restaurants, motels/hotels, or travel.  

Every painting is a self-portrait, so "Paint What You Cannot See" and let every mark represent you.

If you are fearful, the image will be uncertain. Follow your instincts and paint as if you don’t give a damn about the outcome. Paint feelings, not things. Work in series and allow each experience to surprise you.

These ideas are calculated to encourage and support your journey as an artist. Do each lesson with enthusiasm and the joy of discovery.

Lesson 1-Expressing emotional ideas without realistic images

Lesson 2-First create the emotion or sense and then add the recognizable subject.

Lesson 3-Start with a formula for making heads and then create the emotions and character of the person or thing.

Lesson 4-By changing the contrast of value or color, we obtain differing ideas and moods.

Lesson 5-Let your instincts begin the painting process by arbitrary application of colors, lines, and textures, impose a dominance based on mood, and complete the image with thoughtful editing,
