Artistic Exploration

This is a Mentored class. That means the emphasis is on guidance rather than on technical instruction.

This allows each participant to set and explore their own goals and process, at their own level, with the support and expertise of Skip’s 60+ years of experience. It is not a technical “how-to, paint-along” style class.

Each student begins with a private consultation with Skip to clarify specific goals and intentions for the week. Bring examples of past work and notes on your goals to the consultation. This is the perfect opportunity to try new things and work with guidance and support. Moving beyond one’s creative comfort zone, exploration and experimentation are encouraged!

There is no set supply list. Each student will provide all their own materials and easel, as needed.

Monday begins with scheduling a one-on-one conference with Skip to set goals and discuss your work. During daily class, Skip may include slideshows, lectures, demonstration and lots of personal communication each day. There will be 2 group critiques of per week and ongoing daily conversations of your work in progress.

I am excited about this time together and to seeing the results of “What If” painting.

William B. (Skip) Lawrence received a BFA degree from the Maryland Institute College of Art and M.A. degree from Towson University.  His book, Painting Light and Shadow in Watercolor, was published in 1994.  Skip was editor-and-chief of “The Palette Magazine”.  Website: with blog.

“Red Box”  by Skip    acrylic on rag paper    15″ x 20″

Whether you want to continue developing your art process in the same direction, are looking to expand your style vocabulary, or make radical changes in your art, Skip can help you redraw your map, reset your goals and get you going.

The mentored workshop format is geared toward independent work with guidance. Skip offers insight, options and helps clarify your goals. Starting from a one-on-one conference with Skip you will set your personal course for the workshop. Demo’s critiques and Informative programs round out the workshop.

You are supported by the gracious and comfortable surroundings of Bon Secours Retreat and Conference Center, our workshop “home” for eleven years!

Enrollment is limited.

All media are welcome.

Note that the workshop is an extended schedule, beginning Sunday afternoon and ending Saturday morning
